Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my chimney swept?

According to the Solid Fuel Association guidelines:

  • Smokeless fuels: At least once a year.
  • Wood burning: Quarterly when in use (approx. every 3 months).
  • Coal: Twice a year.
  • Oil/Gas: Once a year.
Will having my chimney swept make a mess in my house?

No! I use a powerful industrial vacuum cleaner designed specifically for chimney sweeping, along with sealable sheets and dust sheets. I take every precaution to ensure your home remains clean.

How long does a chimney sweep take?

A standard chimney sweep usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the condition of the chimney and the type of appliance. Bird nest removals may take longer.

Can you sweep all types of chimneys?

Yes, I am trained to sweep all types of flues, including those for open fires, wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves, inglenooks, and AGA/Rayburn cookers.

Do I need to do anything to prepare the room before you arrive?

There is no need to move all your furniture! To make things easier, please clear any ornaments or fuel from the hearth and ensure the fire is completely cold (don't light it for at least 24 hours). I will provide all the necessary clean floor coverings and industrial-grade sheeting to protect your carpet and furnishings while I work.

How long does a standard chimney sweep take?

A standard sweep and safety inspection usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour. However, if I am removing a bird’s nest or performing a detailed CCTV inspection, it may take a little longer. I always aim to be thorough rather than rushed to ensure your flue is perfectly clear.

Can you sweep my chimney if I live in a terraced house or a high-rise?

Yes, absolutely. Being based in Pendle, I am very experienced with the traditional stone-built terraces common in our area. I have specialised rods and brushes designed to navigate the tight bends and tall stacks often found in our local Northern architecture.

What is the difference between power sweeping and traditional manual sweeping?

Traditional sweeping uses hand-pushed brushes, whilst ‘power-sweeping’ uses a specialised tool that rotates at a controlled speed.  It allows the rotary head to shape with your chimney and is very effective at removing stubborn deposits of creosote.

Wendy the Sweep is trained in manual and rotary/power sweeping methods.

What happens if you discover a problem during the CCTV inspection?

If the HD camera inspection reveals cracks, a degraded liner, or a hazardous obstruction, Wendy the Sweep will show you the footage and explain exactly what it means for your safety.

You can also request a detailed written report, outlining any necessary repairs or recommending a local chimney technician if the work falls outside Wendy the Sweep’s scope.

Do you sweep chimneys even in the summer months?

Yes! Summer is actually the best time to book your sweep. It ensures any soot or debris from the previous winter is removed (which prevents "damp soot" smells during humid weather) and means your fire is ready to be lit as soon as the first cold snap hits without the long waiting lists found in autumn.
