I’m often called by customers, and sometimes directly by installers, to carry out pre-installation chimney sweeps and checks.
This might be before a new stove is fitted, or when an existing gas fire has been removed and the flue needs preparing for a replacement.
It’s one of those steps that can easily be overlooked, but it plays a really important role in making sure everything that follows is safe, efficient, and set up properly from the start.
Why pre-installation checks matter
Before any new appliance is installed, the chimney and flue need to be in a suitable condition for use.
Over time, flues naturally collect by-products of combustion — soot, debris, tar deposits, and sometimes even fallen masonry or bird nesting materials.
It’s often surprising just how much can be sitting inside a flue that hasn’t been used or maintained for a while.
If this isn’t cleared before installation, it can:
- Restrict airflow and affect performance
- Lead to smoke spillage or poor draw
- Increase the risk of blockages or chimney fires
- Interfere with the safe operation of the new appliance
In short, you’re fitting a new appliance onto an unknown system, which is never ideal.
Sweeping before installation
A pre-installation sweep ensures the flue is clean and free from obstructions.
This provides a clear passage for combustion gases and allows the installer to assess the condition of the chimney more accurately.
Guidance aligned with HETAS supports the need for flues to be appropriately prepared and inspected before being brought into use with a new solid fuel appliance.
For gas appliances, installers registered with Gas Safe Register will also need confidence that the flue is suitable and safe for operation.
Checking the condition of the flue
Sweeping is just one part of the process, understanding the condition of the flue is just as important.
As your professional NACS registered chimney sweep, during a pre-installation visit, I’ll be looking for:
- Signs of damage or deterioration inside the flue
- Blockages or restrictions
- Evidence of previous fuel use (which can affect suitability)
- Excessive creosote or soot build-up
In some cases, further inspection (such as CCTV) may be recommended to give a clearer picture internally.
Working alongside your installer
Pre-installation chimney checks are often part of a wider team effort.
By working alongside installers, whether HETAS registered engineers or Gas Safe Register engineers, it helps ensure that everything is aligned from the outset.
It’s about giving everyone confidence that:
- The flue is clean
- The system is suitable
- The installation can proceed safely
A small step that makes a big difference
It might seem like a simple step, but preparing the chimney properly before installation can prevent a lot of issues further down the line.
It supports:
- Better appliance performance
- Safer operation
- Reduced maintenance problems
And ultimately, it helps protect both your home and your investment.
A note from Wendy the Sweep
There’s something really satisfying about getting things right from the beginning.
A clean, checked flue gives your new fire or stove the best possible start, and gives you peace of mind that everything is working as it should.
If you’re planning an installation, or your installer has recommended a pre-check, I’m always happy to help and talk you through what’s needed.
From the firesides of Pendle and surrounding areas, I’m here to help keep your hearth burning bright and clean all year round.
